People have been inspired by stories since ancient times, and we believe that stories can help to move our nation forward.
No doubt about it, we seek change and we believe that the time has come for a major shift in the way Americans are invited to think about issues like the environment, climate change and global warming.
From the Environmental Community Dictionary of the Future:
- Doomenese (noun) (pronounced doo mehn eez; derived from the word “doom”) – a depressing language and visual lexicon used from the late 1960’s to the early part of the 21st century to describe the world’s future.
- Optimish (noun) (pronounced ahp ti mish; derived from the word “optimism”) – a motivating language and visual lexicon developed in 2010 to put forth a positive vision of the future. Optimish is now widely used to describe a positive future based on action by America to find solutions to the climate change challenge.
While the reality of climate change must and should be a part of the strategy for change, we have to stop hoping that more people will respond when we speak in Doomenese because this strategy fails to motivate, or even worse, causes people to deny that there’s even a problem (see the Go Optimism presentation below). Let’s get better and more intentional about speaking in Optimish – Converge isn’t about what will happen if we DON’T act, it’s about what WILL happen when we DO act.
